No parent or guardian wants to see a child injured or even worse, as Center of Disease Control statistics note drowning is the top cause of injury and death for children between the ages 1-4 and second highest for children in the age range of 1-14.

White Plains YWCA Aquatic Director Roxanne Skeene put it simply: “We need to ensure our children are safe around water.”

She said these tips will help parents and guardians realize that "they play a key role in protecting their children from drowning."

Things to remember are:

  • Make sure there is a responsible adult watching children in and around the water.
  • Life jackets are required, even if children know how to swim. This is particularly important when enjoying lakes or oceans.
  • Remember, Water Wings and toys that float aren't designed to be safety devices.
  • Know CPR.
  • Make sure children know basic swimming skills, including being able to float and tread water.

If you're interested in having a child take lessons, the YWCA will be having multiple classes throughout the summer for all age groups.
