Chappaqua Bake Sale Raises Record Amount For Charity

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Fifty families and 100 businesses worked together Saturday to raise more than $12,000 at the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale.

The third annual community event supported Share Our Strength's fight against childhood hunger.

"We had a great turnout today and met our goal by raising $12,203 for Share Our Strength," said co-chair Allison Spiegel.

Spiegel, along with co-chairs Holly Blum and Jessica Reinmann and many volunteers, sold hundreds of homemade cookies and cupcakes, sweet treats donated by local businesses and restaurants, sponsored a guessing jar contest and ran a $10-per-ticket raffle.

"The guessing jar table was new last year and was our children’s idea as was the addition of the face painter this year," said Spiegel. "Our children do help man the guessing jar but also love to hold up their signs on the street to encourage people passing by to stop at the bake sale – they are quite good at this too."

Some of the local businesses that donated sweet treats were Starbucks, Kendall's Om Kitchen, Chappaqua Village Market, Gail Patrick's Cafe, Susan Lawrence, Jean Jacques and Sherry B Dessert Studio.

In addition, "local businesses generously donated 11 prize packages," said Spiegel. "More than $10,000 in prizes were up for grabs."

Those packages included gift certificates or discounts to Chappaqua businesses Quaker Hill Tavern, Emmary Day Spa, Crabtree's Kittle House, Tiffany Nail, ICD, Chappaqua Airport and Limousine, Dance Emotions, Marmalade, Auntie Penny, Drs. Richard Lipari and Annemarie Mangiameli, Chappaqua Framing, Kent and Chappaqua Paint and Hardware; nearby businesses Saw Mill Club, Club Fit, Westchester Mixed Martial Arts, Try & Buy, Dodd's Liquor City, Bellizzi, Richard Scott Salon, Via Michelle, Lucky Buddha, Village Social, Grand Prix NY, Jacob Burns Film Center, Iron Horse Grill, Michael's Tavern, Pony Express, Via Vanti and Camp Nabby; as well as tickets to see “Evita,” Yankees, Mets and Nets.

Spiegel, Blum and Reinmann started the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale three years ago. In 2010 they said $5,700 was raised and last year they took in $11,824, making them the No. 2 fundraising team in the country.

"We were second after Pinnacle Foods last year," said Siegel. "That felt good."

The group plans to host the Fourth Annual Great Chappaqua Bake Sale next fall. "Each year, we try to work in some new ways to further encourage support and attendance, such as the face painter this year and the addition of a $5 raffle ticket option," said Spiegel.
