Interested in live music, local food and a healthy and beautiful yard? Join Bedford 2020 in an outdoor celebration of the growing season at the Healthy Yards Earth Day Festival.

“Healthy yard practices are important for the health of you and your family, local land and wildlife and clean drinking water,” said Filippine Hoogland, event chair. “This celebration will be a great way to get the community to learn more about healthy yard practices and have some fun!”

Representatives from the Bedford 2020 Water and Land Use Task Force, Leave Leaves Alone; The Great Healthy Yard Project and the Cornell Extension Master Gardeners Program, as well as professional landscapers will be available to give advice to people of all experience levels. Branch Out will give out tree saplings.

Everyone can also participate in the Plant and Seed Swap. Seasoned gardeners can help by bringing seeds collected last year from their native plants, or seeds purchased to plant this spring. Divided native and non-invasive plants can be swapped, as well as extra perennial edibles such as strawberries. Please bring seeds or plants to swap in a container marked with the name of the plant.

“This is going to be a really fun afternoon for the family, with lots of hands-on activities, where everyone can go home with some great ideas about how they can make a difference for the environment by making some small but significant changes to their backyard gardening practices,” said volunteer and Bedford Hills resident, Fiona Mitchell.

This outdoor celebration will feature games; crafts; a treasure hunt for children; the bluegrass, country, and fiddle sounds of the Shovel Ready String Band and The Recliners as well as food vendors. The free festival will be located inside and outside the Bedford Hills Train Station from noon to 4 p.m. on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, rain or shine. Be sure to stop by and support the organizations, businesses and people who keep Bedford and beyond a beautiful and lively place. For more information, visit bedford2020.org/earthday2018 .
