The second annual Chappaqua Children's Book Festival took place on Saturday at Robert E. Bell Middle School

Books were available for sale, along with food vendors from throughout the region and a bake sale was held with money raised to combat childhood hunger.

Dawn Greenberg helped organize the book festival and said she was impressed with the turnout and happy the book fair was blessed with good weather.

"I am an avid reader and I am thrilled my two sons are avid readers," Greenberg said. "It just takes one book to turn a child into an avid reader."

Profits from the book fair go to Yonkers-based JCY Westchester Community Partners which provides books to people in need and sets up one on one reading sessions with youth.

Greenberg said she was pleased with the number of volunteers willing to help with the book fair. She said there had been buzz about the book fair as far as Rhode Island.

"It's really nice," Greenberg said. "Chappaqua is a great town for volunteering."

In honor of Chelsea Clinton's new baby, Greenberg said they would be collecting books and sending them to the Clintons as a gift.

Chappaqua School Superintendent Lyn McKay was walking around with her granddaughter enjoying the event.

"This is fantastic," McKay said. "It's one of the best events we've ever had."

Janice Lubin Kirschner, the senior director of JCY Westchester Community Partners, was making Curious George puppets for kids.

"We want to encourage kids to read," Kirschner said. "Reading is the basis for a successful life. Children who read have the opportunity to grow and experience the world. We want kids to not just learn to read but read to learn."

Kristi Cook was one of the authors at the event. Cook wrote the Haven trilogy, a fictional book about teens with special powers who attend a school in Tarrytown founded by Washington Irving.

"This is wonderful," Cook, who said she enjoyed meeting aspiring authors, said. "This is one of the best run book festivals."
