Easton Library Transforms Itself Into a Gallery

EASTON, Conn. – Proving that you don’t have to head to New York City to see great works of art, the Easton Public Library has put more than 130 pieces of art on display as part of the Easton Art Council’s Annual Members Exhibit.

“These are artists who really are worthy enough to be in a more prestigious venue. We try to get a broad appeal as we can for both Eastonites and the surrounding areas,” said Howard Aaron, co-founder and board member with the Easton Art Council.

The exhibit is hard to miss in the Morehouse Road library, with rows of paintings and photographs in front of the checkout counters, on nearly every inch of the walls and throughout the community room. The pieces include paintings, sculptures and photographs by 74 artists from across Connecticut. The purpose, Aaron said, is to show the residents of Easton that great art can be found just about anywhere.

“These pieces were put here for the town. They were put here for Eastonites to take advantage of,” he said.

The Easton Arts Council has been hosting a members exhibit since 1997 at the library, and Aaron said he is surprised every year by how much it grows. “We had a few pieces back then. We kind of spread the work around a bit to make it look much bigger. But every year we continue to grow, and this year is our largest show ever.”

The nonprofit arts council also hosts a student creative writing competition, a youth talent show and a youth art show and workshop. It also awards scholarships to standout students at Helen Keller Middle School and Joel Barlow High School.

“We are about preserving and fostering the arts in Easton, and we are hoping that everyone comes by to see these great works,” said Aaron.

The exhibit will be on display at the library until Feb. 25. The public can stop by and take a peek anytime during the library’s hours, which can be found here.
