Staples Jumps All Over Westhill

STAMFORD, Conn. ? Staples High School didn’t get caught looking ahead to its Thanksgiving Day matchup with Greenwich on Saturday when it took on Westhill. Instead, the undefeated Wreckers were all business, blowing out the Vikings, 42-21.

“We approached this week like we did the first seven weeks of the year,” Staples Head Coach Marce Petroccio said of his team’s preparation leading up to the contest against the winless Vikings.

The Wreckers put up 42 points in the first half behind strong performances from quarterback Jack Massie and running backs Nick Kelly and Jon Heit. The three did not see any action in the second half as Staples was well in control of the game with a 42-14 lead.

Massie completed nine of 10 for 150 yards and two touchdowns and had only one misfire, a goal-line interception by David Engel. Kelly gained 85 yards and accounted for two scores ? one receiving, one rushing ? and Heil ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

The game between Staples (8-0) and Greenwich (8-1, 8-0 in conference) will decide the champion of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

“We’ve been through enough wars this year, we’re battle-tested,” Petroccio said of his team’s readiness.

The lone bright spot for Westhill was running back Davell Cotterell, who accounted for two Vikings touchdowns, one on a 78-yard kickoff return, the other on a 50-yard rush. His 125 yards put him over the century mark for the second straight game.

“Anytime he gets the ball in his hands he can score,” Vikings Head Coach Dick Cerone said of the junior.

The Vikings (0-8) will be looking to knock off city rival Stamford High on Thanksgiving Day as it ends the season at home.
