Woman Convicted of Defrauding Scarsdale Couple

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --  A Liberian citizen who worked as a home healthcare aide in Scarsdale was convicted this week in Federal Court in White Plains of defrauding the elderly Scarsdale couple she was paid to care for.

Isabel Wilson was convicted Tuesday after a one-week trial.Wilson stole the identities of the elderly couple and used their names to open several credit card accounts. According to court documents, Wilson was hired in 2005 to care for the couple, who both suffered from dementia.

She used their names, social security numbers, and dates of birth to open seven credit card accounts, which she and her husband used to purchase over $73,000 in luxury goods, including furniture, clothing, plane tickets, and a down payment on a Porsche.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wilson also stole the identity of a Rhode Island woman and went to court in Queens to change the victim’s name to Isabel Wilson. She was then able to obtain a U.S.  passport bearing her name. She used that passport to set up a post office box that some of her credit card statements were sent to.

After a series of lies to federal authorities in which Wilson claimed to be born in North Carolina, she was convicted on one count of aggravated identity theft; one count of access device fraud; one count of use of a Social Security number assigned on the basis of false information; three counts of false statements to a federal officer; one count of use of a passport obtained by fraud; and one count of false claim of United States citizenship.

When she is sentenced on Oct. 31, Wilson faces a maximum of 50 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.
