Morgan Stanley Employees To Volunteer At Teatown Lake

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Morgan Stanley, an investment firm in New York City, is bringing 60 employees to volunteer in Westchester at Teatown Lake Reservation on Friday, June 6.

Volunteers will remove invasive species that have overtaken the preserve in recent years. They will remove vines and barberry plants, which are overabundant on Teatown’s Hidden Valley Trail.

Invasive removal is an ongoing stewardship project at Teatown. Morgan Stanley volunteers will use hand pruners and loppers to cut vines and small limbs and larger tools, such as mattocks and weed wrenches to pull roots from the ground.

Early in the day, Teatown will line up all 60 employees to form a bucket brigade, which will allow them to easily move wood chips up a hill in Teatown’s Wildflower Woods to make a smooth walking surface for tours. Morgan Stanley’s assistance with trail maintenance in WFW will assist Teatown in maintaining WFW as an outdoor classroom for school groups, summer camp children and the general public.

Volunteers will pass 15- to 20-pound buckets of gravel over 30 feet to raise the floor for some of the bird enclosures on Teatown’s raptor loop trail to ensure better water drainage.

“We are so grateful to have the assistance of such a large team of volunteers from Morgan Stanley," said Teatown Executive Director Kevin Carter.

"The stewardship of Teatown’s 1,000 acres is an ongoing process throughout the year, made easier by the dedication of corporate groups and other volunteers who visit the preserve regularly and assist in the work which not only helps Teatown but also paves the way for the 10,000 visitors who hike our trails each year. We don’t have the staff to manage all of this work alone, so we literally could not accomplish all that is necessary without their help.”
