New Canaan Begins Talks on 2012-13 Budget

NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – The budget process starts in earnest Tuesday evening when town officials take up a 2012-13 request of $132.8 million, an increase of 9 percent over current spending.

The Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance and Town Council will have a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. for joint discussions with town departments about their requests for the next fiscal year. The recreation, emergency medical services, health and human services and public works departments are first up.

Proposed spending for general government, capital improvements, debt service and Board of Education operations would increase $11.1 million. First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III had asked departments to submit requests with no more than a 2.5 percent increase.

Under the requested figures, the town would have to raise $124.3 million in taxes, more than 9 percent more than this year, to cover the budget. But given the town’s desire to hold the line on taxes, the figure is almost certain to come down.

The selectmen, Town Council and Board of Finance will hold meetings with all departments in the coming weeks to discuss requests. A final budget must be approved by April, and the Board of Finance has to set a tax rate in May.
