WESTPORT, Conn. Westport Little League's run in the 9- and 10-year-old Section 1 tournament ended Wednesday with a 5-1 loss to Edgewood at Peter J. Foley Field in Naugatuck. Edgewood advances to play for the state championship against the Section 2 champion beginning Saturday in Willimantic.
Edgewood, which defeated Westport 11-10 during pool play, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Wednesday's game. Edgewood added two runs in the third, and Westport could not respond until it was too late.
Chris Drbal doubled to lead off the first inning for Westport. Edgewood retired the next three hitters. Westport managed six hits, including two by Jack Lieder. Drew Rogers, Alex Reiner and Chad Knight also had hits.
"We never really got the bats going,'' manager Tim Rogers said. "You have to give their pitcher a lot of credit. He doesn't throw tremendously hard, but he has a change and curveball that he controls. He was a good, smart pitcher. We never got untracked with the bats. They fielded everything, and made some nice plays in the outfield. That's the making for a tough game."
Edgewood was the only team in the district or sectional tournaments to stop Westport. Rogers said it was a magical summer for the young ballplayers to reach the Section 1 final.
"I could not be more proud of what they did,'' Rogers said. "We've had one day off the last month. Every game, every practice, they had their heart into it. They were competitive, they played with great intensity, energy and sportsmanship. It's a good springboard for what's ahead."
