Whoever was responsible tripped a burglar alarm on Wiltside Court just before 9 o’clock last night after throwing a patio chair through the rear-door window, Fox said.
Despite having the alarm, the homeowner hadn’t registered it with the police department, he said.
As a result, it took some time to find him.
The delay may have cost police a shot at catching the bandit or bandits, the chief said.
“The master bedroom of the home had been ransacked and jewelry appeared to have been stolen,” said Fox, whose department called in Midland Park, Ridgewood, and Hawthorne police, along with the Bergen County Police K-9 unit.
A second home nearby was found burglarized the same way, as was a Hil-Ray Avenue home that backs up onto the block. In both cases, jewelry was taken from the master bedroom, Fox said.
The chief asked that anyone who lives or was in the neighborhood and may have seen or heard something suspicious between 8 and 9 last night that helps the investigation contact his department: 201-891-2121.
He also urged anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious as it’s happening to immediately alert authorities.
“See it. Hear it. Report it,” Fox said.
The burglar alarm at the one home was not registered with the police department as required by ordinance and this created some problems in contacting this homeowner. Residents are also reminded to register their alarm system at the police headquarters.
