Northern Westchester Man Plans 450-Mile Bike Trip To Niagara Falls

SOMERS, N.Y. -- Bruce Reisdorf is an avid cyclist whose current personal record for a trip is 100 miles. Later this month, however, he is set to surpass his milestone with a 450-mile trek from Westchester to Niagara Falls.

Reisdorf, who has resided in Somers for close to 30 years, calls the trip the "Tour de Empire."

The end of his journey will not mean there is an immediate conclusion. Once Reisdorf arrives in Niagara Falls, he plans on biking another 61 miles in the annual "Tour de Cure," a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association which turns 75 this year.

Reisdorf will be riding in his 10th consecutive Tour de Cure, he notes in a letter, adding that it is being moved to Niagara Falls.

"An ambitious undertaking or a crazy idea? Possibly both but I like to think of it as taking the ride of my life through the state that has been my home for 58 years," Reisdorf wrote. "This is a vision that I have had for many years and a goal I am excited to achieve."

Reisdorf, in an interview, said that he has a fundraising goal of $10,000, which is similar to what he raised last year.

In his letter, Reisdorf writes that his "Tour de Empire" trip will start on May 28 by going along the Hudson River to Albany before turning west and going through a trail along the Erie Canal before reaching his destination. On June 6 he will then tackle the Tour de Cure.
