WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A White Plains mother found dead near her 4-month-old daughter in their 312 Main St. apartment Saturday was described as a doting mother by shocked neighbors.
Until Sabrina Durrah, 35, was found slain on the floor of her 3H apartment at noon Saturday, neighbors mostly saw Durrah on daily walks with her baby.
Joyce Eybers, 48, who helped fix up the 3H apartment before Durrah moved in three years ago, said she couldn't understand why anybody would want to harm Durrah.
"She was a single mom. She was a great person. She really cared about the baby. She took her out for a walk every day. She did the right thing, so it's really sad," Eybers said.
Eybers said Durrah was a home health care aid prior to her pregnancy. She last saw Durrah and her baby about a week ago when Eybers and her son stuffed a few holes and a gap beneath the stove to assist with a mice problem.
"She's a beautiful baby. She was always smiling and laughing," Eybers said. "It's such a tragedy."
Stephanie LeBlanc, 21, said she was surprised to return from visiting her boyfriend in Connecticut to find detectives investigating The Wellington building.
"She was so kind. She was so sweet. She kept to herself and then this happens," said LeBlanc, a SUNY Purchase student. "It's directly below me, so I'm very uneasy. I never thought this would happen here."
Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said officers were called to The Wellington Saturday afternoon to investigate an unresponsive woman. Durrahs daughter was treated for dehydration at a hospital and is "in good shape," according to Chong. Durrah's death was ruled a homicide Monday morning based on information from the medical examiner.
Lt. Eric Fischer, who commands the detectives unit, said he could not release information about when police believe the killing occurred or discuss suspects. Fischer said detectives are "pursuing every angle" of several leads.
