Local Boy Scout Receives Eagle Scout Ranking

BEDFORD, N.Y—Public works projects can be recognized around the area, from paved roads to bridges built. Sometimes, though, a small improvement can take the most care and be most morally substantial.

A Boy Scout since 2005, Nick Kristensen is a Bedford resident and a senior at Iona Preporatory. Over the course of eight months, he was dedicated to refurbishing the grotto area adjacent to the rectory of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish. The area held a statue of the Blessed Mother, which was without hands and in need of a complete paint job. Because of the poor drainage, the path leading to the statue had nearly disappeared.

Noticing the improvements that needed to be made, Kristensen held a fundraiser to raise money to buy the necessary tools to refurbish the walkway and purchase a new statue. With assistance from 15 other scouts, and seven adults along the way, the crew completed the project using 286 man hours. The effort awarded Kristensen an Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank in the Boy Scout program. The mark was given to him this year in an Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

Kristensen is supported by his mother Janine and father Chris. He plans to study engineering in college.
