"The first time you hear people laugh it's a narcotic," he said. "And you want to keep hearing it."

Needless to say, this veteran showbiz entertainer knows how to deliver. Long known for his comedic timing on “The Bob Newhart Show” and "Newhart," as well as from "Elf" and "The Big Bang Theory" in addition to other films, TV appearances, records and numerous stand-up routines, he's excited to bring his humor to Peekskill's Paramount Hudson Valley Theater.

The show, set for Saturday at 8 p.m, is a compilation of his routines. "People want to hear 'Sir Walter Raleigh' or 'King Kong' or 'The Driving Instructor,'" he said, but the rest will be about laughing and laughter and how essential it is to do it.

Newhart has been performing stand-up for more than 50 years and says it's what keeps his young (and no, he doesn't need notes). Even through his years of having a TV series, he filled his summers with stand-up. "I find if you don't do it for awhile you lose your edge.

"It's a creative process," he said. "And I’m going to keep doing it as long as I physically can."

In other words, get set to laugh, Westchester.

The Paramount Hudson Valley Theater is at 1008 Brown St., (914) 739-0039, ext. 2, www.paramounthudsonvalley.com/. Tickets are $71.27 or $93.54 (including all tax/fees).
