FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield has someone new looking after its cash. Helen DAvanzo was appointed town treasurer last week, replacing former officeholder Sheryl Shaughnessy, whose term expired in November.
Mrs. DAvanzo brings a wealth of financial and community knowledge to this important role, said First Selectman Michael Tetreau, who appointed DAvanzo to the position. In these difficult economic times, we are fortunate to have such a high-caliber individual serve our town.
D'Avanzo received a masters degree in taxation from the University of New Haven and worked for the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor and administrator. More recently, she has been in the private sector as a project manager for Market Data Retrieval in Stamford.
DAvanzo has worked extensively with Fairfields accounts as well. She was a member of the Board of Finance, having finished an unexpired term after Kay Doyle stepped down in 2005. She also served as chair of the Representative Town Meetings Finance Committee while representing District 8.
I am honored to continue my service to Fairfield, she said.
As town treasurer, DAvanzo will manage Fairfields accounts, keeping track of expenses and revenue. She will also serve on two key committees. She will join the Board of Selectmen and Fiscal Officer Paul Hiller on the Bond Committee, which manages the towns debt. She is also now a member of the Board of Library Trustees. The new position is a good fit for DAvanzo, who is currently a member of the board of directors of Friends of the Fairfield Library.
DAvanzo has volunteered with Operation Hope, serving on the charitys board of directors. She also coordinated the TaxAide program at the Fairfield Senior Center, helping elderly Fairfielders prepare their tax returns. For her volunteer work, she recevied the Democratic Town Committees Eunice Postol Community Service Award in 2006.
