CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- The Chappaqua Library is continuing its celebration of the work of Gertrude Stein with several programs this month.

The Opening Ceremonies on Oct. 6 included music from the Chappaqua Orchestra and an antiques car show in Chappaqua. The celebration continues with several events later this month including an artist's reception on Sunday and the film "Gertrude Stein: When This You See, Remember Me," and a lecture/video on Wednesday, according to a press release from the library.

The major events in Stein's Circle, according to the press release, are below:

Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. How to Read the Poetry of Gertrude Stein. Gertrude Stein’s poetry and short prose is unconventional. Rather than reading her work for linear meaning, we may discover her playful messages by reading with an intuitive and experiential approach— since, alas, as she avowed herself, “there is no there there.” Lecturer: Mary Jo Mahoney, Prof. Elmira College

Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. Gertrude’s Things: Words and Objects. Stein’s poetry is cluttered with things: nickels, boxes, dirt, waists, roast beef. Her writing maps a variety of objects, food, and rooms, lingering on each word until “I got their weight and volume complete and put them next to another word.” This talk examines these relationships between language and things. Lecturer: Tom Nurmi, Prof. Elmira College.

Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Modern Art in Paris 1910-30. Gertrude Stein famously opened her home at 27 Rue de Fleurus every Saturday evening to artists and writers for conversation and the exchange of ideas. Lecturer: Titia Hulst, SUNY Purchase, discusses who attended these salons and the impact of the gatherings on the creative community working in Paris.
