MILLWOOD, N.Y. -- A&P has expressed interest in staying in Millwood, New Castle Supervisor Rob Greenstein said Monday, citing feedback he received from the property’s landlord.
The possibility of the grocery store leaving its spot at Millwood Plaza when its lease expires next year has come up recently. The scenario was mentioned in the town’s Sept. 26 newsletter and by Greenstein at a Sept. 29 League of Women Voters discussion, according to a video of the meeting (mention starts at the 26-minute mark ).
“The A&P lease is expiring next year and a few of the tenants in that shopping center were concerned about losing their anchor tenant. It is unclear if the landlord will renew with A&P -- although A&P has expressed interest -- but the owner is 100 percent committed to a grocer at that location,” the newsletter states.
Greenstein, in the Sept. 29 video, recalls how and he and Councilman Adam Brodsky had a meeting with the property owner, saying they were “pleased” to hear that A&P expressed interest.
Greenstein also said rent terms have not been agreed to and other grocers expressed interest. Then he said the owner is “100 percent committed” to having a supermarket.
“The last thing you want to do is lose your anchor tenant,” Greenstein said later in the meeting video.
Greenstein, in an interview Monday, explained he does not want a repeat of D’Agostino’s exit from Chappaqua. The grocer’s 2011 departure and replacement by Walgreens was a major news story at the time and widely reported by local press.
The A&P is in Millwood Plaza, located at 230 Saw Mill River Road. The plaza's other businesses include Tazza Cafe, Drug Mart of Millwood and a Chase Bank as well as Millwood’s post office.
A&P did not respond to a request for comment.
