Chappaqua Liquor Retailers Embrace Holiday Season

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Whether it’s relatives enjoying a glass—or two—of wine at Christmas dinner, toasting champagne with loved ones as the ball drops on New Year’s Eve or spiking the eggnog with a little extra rum, alcoholic beverages are a big part of the adult holiday experience.

Kirk Sprenger, owner of Chappaqua Wine & Spirit Co at 65 King St., relies on wine tastings and orders of boutique brands to enhance his store's holiday inventory.

The two wine and spirit shops in Chappaqua prepare accordingly.

“It is certainly the most important, busiest time for our business,” said Hilltop Wines and Spirits owner Peter Costello.

Costello, who has been the owner of Hilltop for 23 of its 50-year existence, is having a holiday wine tasting on Saturday, Dec. 22 and Saturday, Dec. 29 from 2 to 6 p.m. His store is located at 432 King St.

“We bring in some new products every holiday season,” he said. “This year, cognacs and ports have been popular last-minute gifts.”

Kirk Sprenger, owner of Chappaqua Wine & Spirit Co at 65 King St., said wine tastings and boutique products are popular items during the holiday season, as they push people to try new things.

“We’ve created some new brands ourselves and have also brought in some unique products,” he said. “If there’s ever a time of year when a customer is likely to try out something new, this is one.”

Sprenger refers to this time of year as “OND,” which stands for October, November, December. Those three months account for 40 percent of his annual revenue, with a huge chunk of it coming right now.

“It’s been a good holiday season for us so far,” he said. “Hopefully, with Christmas and New Year’s on the horizon, it keeps progressing that way.”
